I had the great honor of serving in the Maine Legislature for the eight years that Sen. Angus King served as our governor. Over that time, Gov. King hosted a weekly breakfast for all of the House and Senate leaders. Those breakfasts forged some bipartisan consensus, but perhaps just as importantly, a sense of mutual respect and understanding of our colleagues’ opinions and beliefs.
Most of the time at breakfast, I chose to sit next to Paul Davis. Paul represented the very conservative Piscataquis County, and I represented a much more progressive, downtown Portland.
Because of Gov. King’s breakfasts, Paul and I struck up a real friendship, talking about family, fishing, and ways we could find common ground.
The pleasure of the dialogue that Sen. King fostered, and his ability to bring people together from very different political positions, is the hallmark of my support for Sen. King’s reelection.
Our country desperately needs more Angus Kings. We could not be better served.
