In a four-way race that is notable for its quietness, independent Sen. Angus King has earned our vote Nov. 5. He will probably garner more than the total vote of his three opponents — Republican Demi Kouzounas, independent Jason Cherry and Democrat David Costello.
At the age of 80, Angus King has remained vigorous and enthusiastic. He has a good sense of humor.
One of his signature achievements as governor was to provide laptop computers to every seventh- and eighth-grader in the state. He successfully guided the state through the disastrous Ice Storm of 1998.
Working with the rest of Maine’s congressional delegation, King was able to convince Congress to require that all purchases of athletic footwear by the military are made at New Balance shoes, based in Skowhegan. Thus, the pending flight of New Balance out of Maine was brought to a halt.
