BRUNSWICK, ME— U.S. Senator Angus King’s reelection campaign is announcing that it has received the endorsement of Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, an organization committed to ending senseless gun violence across the United States.
Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund is the parent organization of Moms Demand Action and Students Demand Action.
“Last year, Maine experienced a tragic incident in Lewiston that far too many families across the country are familiar with – the senseless deaths of loved ones due to gun violence. That is why Maine needs a leader who can effectively legislate much-needed change at the federal level,” said Angela Ferrell Zabala, executive director of Moms Demand Action. “Angus King is that leader and has proven that he can work across the aisle to increase mental health resources for those in need, funding for red flag laws, enhanced background checks and more. He has also proven that he can find unique ways to save lives by regulating the functionality of a weapon rather than a weapon’s name. Everytown for Gun Safety is proud to endorse Angus King so that no other family must experience senseless injury or loss from gun violence.”
In response to the endorsement, King wrote:
Last year, Senator King introduced a comprehensive piece of legislation to protect communities from gun violence while safeguarding law-abiding Americans’ constitutional right to own a firearm for legitimate self-defense, hunting and sporting purposes. The GOSAFE Act would regulate the sale, transfer, and manufacture of gas-operated semi-automatic weapons.
Senator King also previously led bipartisan, common-sense legislation to address the gun violence epidemic in the United States while protecting the constitutional rights of law-abiding Americans. The Safer Communities Act, passed in 2022, includes the Extreme Violence Protection Order and Violence Prevention Act filed by Senators King and Marco Rubio supporting red flag laws, along with enhanced background checks for buyers under 21, and increased mental health resources.
