Angus King’s Reelection Endorsed by Labor Groups Across Maine

The endorsement was announced in a NewsCenter Maine clip found here

BRUNSWICK, ME— U.S. Senator Angus King’s reelection campaign today is announcing that it has received the endorsements of key labor groups for his work to protect workers’ rights for all Maine employees: Maine AFL-CIO and the Maine Service Employees Association.

“During his time in the US Senate, Senator Angus King has supported kitchen table issues that working people care about. From voting for legislation that rescued pensions for thousands of Maine workers and lowering costs of lifesaving prescription drugs like insulin, to bringing jobs to our shipyards, protecting the postal service and ensuring our first responders have the resources they need to protect our communities, Senator King has stood for everyday people,” said Cynthia Phinney, President of Maine AFL-CIO. “Senator King has also been a key co-sponsor of the Protecting the Right Organize (PRO) Act, the strongest piece of worker empowerment legislation since the New Deal. On behalf of our 42,000 working members and retirees we are proud to support Senator King for re-election.”

“I’m voting to re-elect Senator Angus King on November 5th because in D.C., he stands up for all Maine workers and Maine’s public sector workforce. Senator King cosponsored the Social Security Fairness Act. He supports the Protect the Right to Organize Act (PRO Act) to make it easier for workers to have a voice in their wages, benefits and working conditions. Senator King fights for Maine’s working families and retirees. That’s why my union has endorsed him and that’s why I’m voting to re-elect him,” said Kaye Lozier of Wallagrass, a child protective services caseworker for the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, and a member of the Maine Service Employees Association, Local 1989 of the Service Employees International Union

Angus King has been a longstanding advocate for workers’ rights. He was one of the original leaders to establish the country’s first ever nationwide Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) policy, which was included in the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and implemented in 2018. Earlier this year, he introduced the bipartisan Paid Family and Medical Leave Tax Credit Extension and Enhancement Act that would provide certainty to businesses by making the paid family leave tax credit permanent and would provide additional options for financing paid leave such as through PFML insurance. Importantly, the bill also includes a King-led provision that allows eligible employers to receive the credit for leave offered in excess of any state or local mandates, offering a significant incentive for employers who wish to offer more leave than the Maine requirement.

Senator King has also been supportive of the PRO Act, the American Rescue Plan, and the Paycheck Fairness Act to ensure that all workers in Maine are able to have a voice in their paychecks and their working conditions.
