From there, he shifted his focus to causes that would better the lives of people in Maine – from working as chief counsel to the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Alcoholism and Narcotics in the office of former Maine Senator William Hathaway to joining an alternative energy company and then founding a business committed to energy conservation initiatives.
In May of 1993, motivated by his concern about the Maine economy and the negative effects of excessive partisanship, Angus declared his intention to run for Governor of Maine as an Independent. Eighteen months later, he won the election, beginning two terms that he dedicated to creating jobs, reigniting the economy, reforming the state’s mental health services, investing in the public education system, working toward common-sense environmental regulations and more.
On a cold day in early January 2013, Angus King raised his right hand and was sworn in as Maine’s U.S. Senator – the most important job of his career and one he’d be honored to continue in the years to come.
Since then, he’s continued to build bipartisan consensus around the challenges facing the nation – working to improve the prospects for everyday Maine people, protecting our national security interests at home and abroad, sustaining Americans’ faith in our founding principles, and fighting to build a stronger, healthier country and environment for the generations that will come after us.
Today, he lives in Brunswick with his wife, Mary. They have one daughter, Molly, and four sons, Angus III, Duncan, James and Ben, along with seven precious grandchildren.
