Maine people from every walk of life and every corner of the state believe in King’s leadership
BRUNSWICK, ME – The Angus King for U.S. Senate Campaign announced today that EqualityMaine has endorsed U.S. Senator Angus King’s (I-Maine) re-election to the U.S. Senate. EqualityMaine is the oldest and largest statewide organization working to secure full equality for Maine’s LGBTQ community.
“Our country was built upon the principles of freedom and equal justice for all Americans,” Senator King said. “In Maine, we can stand tall knowing that we have been on the forefront in promoting these principles for the LGBTQ community, and have worked hard to protect LGBTQ rights and support marriage-equality. But the fight for equal rights is not over, and we must work every day to support love, stop hate crimes, strengthen anti-discrimination laws, and march forward to help our fellow citizens. I am honored to have the support of EqualityMaine, which has done so much for the LGBTQ community in our state, and will continue to march forward with them.”
“EqualityMaine is proud to endorse Senator King, who has worked tirelessly to further equal rights and protections under the law,” said Shawn LaGrega, Vice President, EqualityMaine Board of Directors. “Through his steadfast advocacy in Maine and support of non-discrimination protections at the federal level, we have made important progress for LGBTQ people around the nation. But there is still work ahead, and we need serious leaders like Senator King in office to continue the fight for civil rights.”
Senator King has been an advocate for the LGBTQ community throughout his time in public office, and has supported a number of initiatives to protect the rights of LGBTQ people as both senator and governor. His record on LGBTQ issues includes:
Introducing Historic Federal Anti-Discrimination Legislation – Senator King co-sponsored the Equality Act, which would add sexual orientation and gender identity to other protected classes, such as race or religion, to existing federal laws. The bill also would ban discrimination in a host of areas, including employment, housing, public accommodations, jury service, access to credit, and federal funding.
Supporting Marriage Equality – Senator King was an outspoken advocate for the 2012 state referendum legalizing same-sex marriage, helping Maine to be among the first states in the country to legalize same-sex marriage at the ballot box.
Fighting for Homeless LGBTQ Youth – Senator King cosponsored the Runaway and Homeless Youth and Trafficking Prevention Act. This bill would reauthorize federal funding to curb youth homelessness and prohibit any federal grantee from discriminating against a child based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Forty percent of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ.
Championing Maine’s Anti-Discrimination Law – In 1997, then-Governor King signed into law historic legislation that amended the Maine Human Rights Act to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. When a People’s Veto effort was organized to roll back the legislation, Governor King was an outspoken advocate for protecting the rights granted under the new law.
Senator King has also been endorsed by Human Rights Campaign, End Citizens United, the Maine Education Association, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the Professional Firefighters of Maine, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local S6, the Maine State Council of Machinists, the League of Conservation Voters, Maine AFL-CIO, MSEA-SEIU, Council for a Livable World, and the Maine Innkeepers Association and Maine Restaurant Association.
