CLW calls King a ‘true independent in thought and vote’
BRUNSWICK, ME – The Angus King for U.S. Senate Campaign today announced that the Council for a Livable World has endorsed U.S. Senator Angus King’s (I-Maine) re-election to U.S. Senate. The Council for a Livable World promotes policies to reduce and eventually eliminate nuclear weapons and to minimize the risk of war by helping elect and support Members of Congress who share its goals.
“At a time of heightened conflict around the globe, we must work each day to build a more stable and safe world,” Senator King said. “Serving on the Senate Armed Services Committee, my top priority has always been to better protect the people of Maine, and I have worked with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to focus on diplomatic solutions to our foreign policy challenges that encourage open dialogue and safeguard Americans at home and abroad. With the President’s recent misguided decision to abrogate the Iran nuclear agreement, we have a critical road ahead to reassure our allies and partners of our commitments and to stop nuclear proliferation in the region and around the world. I am honored to have the endorsement of Council for a Livable World. Today, and every day, let us recommit ourselves to a more peaceful and prosperous world.”
“Council for a Livable World is proud to have endorsed Senator King in his first Senate race and to endorse his reelection this year. As a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, he has spent a great deal of time focusing on nuclear weapons issues, and has received a perfect score from the Council in the past,” said Council for a Livable World Executive Director John Tierney. “Senator King is truly independent in thought and votes, including on nuclear weapons issues, negotiations with North Korea and President Trump’s violation of the Iran nuclear agreement — in those instances he has always voted for diplomacy over conflict without compromising U.S. national security.”
Through his work on the Senate Armed Services Committee and Senate Intelligence Committee, Senator King has worked to protect Maine people, strengthen U.S. national security, and further stability around the globe. Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.), Chairman of the Armed Services Committee, once called Senator King, “one of the most serious and hardworking members” of the Committee. During a November 2017 Armed Services Committee hearing on National Defense Strategy, Senator King underscored the importance of diplomacy over war, citing the need for diplomacy with China for a successful outcome in North Korea, and the significance of strengthening ties between the Iraqi government, the Kurds, and Iraq’s Sunni population for a more stable Iraqi state. In 2015, after considerable research and outreach to Maine people, Senator King announced his support for the Iran nuclear agreement between the United States, the P5+1 partners, the European Union, and Iran.
Senator King has been endorsed by End Citizens United, the Maine Education Association, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the Professional Firefighters of Maine, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local S6, the Maine State Council of Machinists, the League of Conservation Voters, Maine AFL-CIO, and the Maine Innkeepers Association and Maine Restaurant Association.
