BRUNSWICK, ME – The Angus King for U.S. Senate Campaign today announced that the Professional Firefighters of Maine (PFFM) has endorsed U.S. Senator Angus King’s (I-Maine) re-election to the U.S. Senate.

“While most people run from danger, Maine firefighters run towards it. They are the heroes we hope we never have to call on, but when we do, we are eternally grateful they answered the call,” said Senator King. “From fighting fires to combating the opioid epidemic, Maine firefighters on are on the front lines of our state’s most serious emergencies, which is why I’ve made funding community fire departments a priority – supporting legislation that gives them the resources they need and seeking federal grants that help them safely do their jobs. I am forever grateful to the Professional Firefighters of Maine for the trust they’ve put in me to keep fighting for them in Washington.”

“From fighting for the Zadroga Act, which permanently reauthorized health benefits for 9/11 first responders, to helping secure essential funding for Maine’s local fire departments, Angus King has stood with firefighters every step of the way,” said John Martell, President of the PFFM. “We need people like Angus representing Maine in Washington, and the Professional Firefighters of Maine look forward to continuing our close work with the Senator for another term.”

Throughout Senator King’s career in public service, he has fought for Maine firefighters and first responders. He was a co-sponsor of the reauthorization of the Zadroga Act, which passed the Senate as part of the FY 2016 spending bill. The legislation is named after James Zadroga, a New York City police officer whose death was attributed to exposure to debris in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks on the World Trade Center. Senator King is a co-sponsor of the Firefighter Cancer Registry Act of 2018, bipartisan legislation that would create a national registry for firefighters diagnosed with cancer. Senator King is also a member of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus, and has advocated for the Assistance to Firefighters Grant program and SAFER Grant program which both help give firefighters the resources they need to fight fires and do their jobs.

Senator King has also been endorsed by End Citizens United, the Maine Education Association, and Planned Parenthood Action Fund.
